The short answer

Dots are OpenAI's always-on AI agents inside ChatGPT. OpenAI announced them on Sep 29, 2026. Each dot runs on GPT-6 Astra, has its own cloud computer, and can keep working toward your goals around the clock. It connects to over 4,000 apps through OpenAI's plugins. You can reach your dot in ChatGPT, Slack or Teams, and it learns your preferences over time (OpenAI).

Who can use them (as of late Oct 2026)

Plan Dots?
ChatGPT Pro Yes. The first dot is included. Rolling out gradually
ChatGPT Business Premium Yes. The first dot is included
Enterprise / Edu / Healthcare Beta, if a workspace admin turns it on
Free, Go, Plus No
Rollout is limited to "eligible markets" (OpenAI). Engadget reports that at launch, Pro users in the EU, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Switzerland and the UK were excluded.

What it costs

  • OpenAI says your first dot is included in your Pro or Business Premium plan at no extra cost, with extended usage limits for the first month.
  • Reported plan prices: Pro at $100, $200 or $500/month. Business Premium at $125/user/month, or $100 billed annually (Zapier, Engadget, AideDex, citing OpenAI's pricing and help pages).
  • OpenAI says chatting with your dot doesn't count toward usage limits, but tasks it runs in Codex or ChatGPT Work do. OpenAI plans to let you add more dots and pay for more speed or more work per month, but hasn't announced that pricing.

How to set one up

OpenAI says to create your first dot in the ChatGPT desktop app or a desktop browser, connect your apps, and let it introduce itself. OpenAI's Oct 5–9 release notes added creating your dot in the ChatGPT mobile app. (Engadget's Oct 13 article says creation was desktop-only, which suggests it was written before the mobile update reached everyone.)

Should you care?

If you're on Plus, you can't use dots yet. If you already pay for Pro or Business Premium, your first dot is included in what you pay. The real cost is any work it does beyond chat, which counts against your plan's limits.

What is confirmed, and what is not

  • ✅ It's a real product. Its features, model, cloud computer, 4,000+ apps, plan eligibility, first-dot-included and usage-limit rules come from OpenAI's announcement text (search snippet, 2026-10-30). We couldn't load openai.com directly, so this is from OpenAI's published text as indexed by search.
  • ⚠️ REPORTED: the Pro tier prices ($100/$200/$500) and Business Premium prices come from Zapier, Engadget and AideDex, not an OpenAI page we read. The EU/UK exclusion list comes from Engadget.
  • ⚠️ There's a conflict over mobile creation (Engadget said desktop-only; OpenAI's later notes say mobile works), and it's resolved here in favor of the newer official note.
